Grammar mistakes that cost marks
At B1, the errors that show up most are word order, case endings and verb forms. They are predictable, which means they are preventable.
- Wrong: Ich denke, dass er hat recht. → Right: Ich denke, dass er recht hat. (verb to the end in dass-clauses)
- Wrong: mit der Auto → Right: mit dem Auto (dative after mit)
- Wrong: Ich habe gegeht → Right: Ich bin gegangen (irregular perfect + sein)
- Wrong: Er kann gut Deutsch sprechen nicht → Right: Er kann nicht gut Deutsch sprechen (negation placement)
Writing mistakes
The biggest writing losses are not grammatical: missing a bullet point, choosing the wrong register, and writing too little. Examiners check content and structure first, so a polished letter that ignores a bullet still drops marks.
Listening mistakes
Candidates lose listening points by trying to understand every word and freezing on unknown vocabulary, or by failing to read the questions in advance. Falling for distractors — the wrong option mentioned first — is also common.
Speaking mistakes
In speaking, the typical errors are reciting a memorised script, not reacting to your partner, and going silent when stuck. The planning task specifically rewards interaction, so a monologue scores poorly however accurate it is.
Exam-technique mistakes
Beyond language, candidates run out of time in reading, leave blanks, and panic over hard questions. Practising with a watch and answering easy items first prevents almost all of these.
How to stop repeating mistakes
Errors become habits unless they are corrected. Keep a personal error log, review it before each practice session, and have your writing and speaking checked so the same mistake does not reappear in the exam.
Practise with AI
Create a free Sprichst account and start practising with an AI tutor that gives instant feedback in seconds. The tutor catches your recurring B1 mistakes, explains the rule behind each, and drills you until the correct form is automatic.
Try a free TELC mock test
Inside Sprichst you can sit full telc Deutsch B1 mock tests covering Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen, with automatic scoring and AI evaluation of your writing and speaking. A full mock test reveals which mistakes actually cost you points, so you can fix the ones that matter most.
TELC readiness check
Before you book your telc Deutsch B1 exam, find out whether you are actually ready. A readiness check is simply a full, timed mock test that produces a single score across reading, listening, writing and speaking — the same four skills the real exam measures. If your readiness score is comfortably above the pass mark on two separate tests, you are ready to book with confidence.
Sprichst turns each mock attempt into a readiness score and breaks it down by section, so you can see at a glance whether your exam guides work is paying off or whether another skill is holding you back. Re-check every couple of weeks to track your progress toward 60% overall (roughly 180 of 300 points) and you must pass the written and oral parts together.
